Dyson headphones review: Design
I’ve heard the Dyson Zone’s design compared to the mask worn by Batman’s nemesis Bane, the Transformer’s visor, and something Tony Stark has built in his lab. While this device feels like it’s straight out of science fiction, I happen to think it looks like a Dyson product.
But adapting Dyson’s design language to a pair of headphones might not be the best move. With the face shield, the headset weighs 1.47 pounds. That’s a lot of stuff I have to carry on my head and have to carry around with me. Both the AirPods Max and Sony WH-1000XM5 weigh less than 1 pound for comparison, so I think they’re too heavy. I respect that it needs to accommodate an air purifier, but what is the cost of comfort?
Furthermore, the material of the headphones themselves actually looks premium, but on the contrary, the visor seems cheap. It’s mostly plastic and looks like it could break if bent the wrong way. Plus, it attracts fingerprints and makes a lot of noise.
The safest way to carry the headphones around is with the wallet-like carrying case that comes with the $1,000 package. For city living, I love a handy bag. I can even fit my phone and wallet inside along with the headphones. I’m not sure if the Dyson navy blue is my color, but I think I got it during this review period.

Dyson headphones review: Application and air quality
As mentioned, having cool air blowing through my nose and mouth (especially on public transportation) is quite a pleasant feeling. Of the four levels, the strongest was the one I wanted, despite the greater battery drain, as at lower speeds I could barely feel the wind. The mode automatically adjusted to the air quality around me, but it never exited the lowest speed, despite being in some pretty harsh conditions.
Which brings us to the question: How do you know if they work? The app has plenty of data for you to dig into, with regional air quality reports and real-time NO 2 monitoring , plus a traffic light system that shows how bad the air quality is. However, the real-time reading only kicks in when you’re wearing the headphones, and confusingly there’s no warning about poor air quality, which feels like a missed opportunity.

The app is also how you see the air quality around you, both in your location and actually what the headset is picking up around it. It specifically reads the level of nitrogen dioxide, which enters the air from burning fuel, in places with many buildings or industrial areas or large trucks and buses, even just tons of cars in traffic. . Most of the places in NYC where I wore my headphones didn’t record pollution levels during the average day, so unless I just wanted to feel the airflow, I didn’t find it necessary to wear them. It wasn’t until bushfire smoke blanketed the city that the Dyson app warned me about the unhealthy AQI, and I was glad to still have the review unit in my possession. While this tells me that I should try to avoid spending time outside, I really wanted to see how the Dyson Zone performed with air filtration. Since the headphones can capture 99% of particles as small as 0.1 microns that pass through the filter, that means at least some air pollution must be filtered out. It may not have the same seal as the KN95, but it’s certainly better than nothing.

Dyson headphones review: Battery life
However, the constant flow of air poses a major obstacle. With all the action going, the Dyson Zone only lasts about two hours on a full charge. That means on a 6-hour flight I need to leave them plugged in most of the time. Luckily, on the way home, I was able to make both the morning and evening trips, but I still had to charge the battery every night.
In my experience, without using a face shield, I can listen to music with active noise cancellation for much longer, more than 10 hours. It’s still not as durable as the Sony WH-1000XM5 that I often use when traveling, which has a battery life of over 30 hours.
Dyson headphones review: Sound performance
In a way, the whole visor filtering situation weakens the audio performance of the Dyson Zone. As the company’s first real audio product, it’s actually very good. Is it better than headphones that cost half the price (or less)? No, but it’s on par with some of the best noise-canceling headphones you can buy today.
The Dyson Zone’s active noise cancellation is also very strong. On the plane, I couldn’t hear the babies crying or the drink service going on while listening to the show and music.
